Na “Only Bleeding” (2001), en “Ain’t No Train Outta Nashville” (2007) heeft Pete Berwick zijn 3e cd “Just Another Day In Hell” (2009) op de markt gebracht. Het eerste nummer “Vacancy In My Heart” is nogal heftig, en meteen vroeg ik me af waar ik dit album onder zou moeten catagoriseren… Gewoon keiharde rock met schreeuwende electrische gitaren en een rauwe whiskystem ?

Gelukkig klinkt de rest van de cd me een stuk beter in de oren, en na een paar keer het eerste nummer te hebben beluisterd, snap ik ook de pijn die het eerste nummer wel uit moet schreeuwen.. pissed zingt hij "Hey baby, now you wanna leave me this way ? ... and I go down for the last time in the deep blue ocean of love.... Hey baby, now why you wanna tear us apart and leave me standing here all alone with a vacancy in my heart !" Zoals Pete zelf zegt: “Call it roots rock, call it americana, call it alternative country or call it cowpunk”. In the end, it's “Just Another Day In Hell”. Hij wilde absoluut geen gladde Nashville sound, maar meer het werk van ‘being on the road’, vandaar dat hij voor dit album zijn vroegere band members heeft gevraagd… guitarist Rick Devries, bassist Nick Verbic en drummer Rob Sury.

Een gladde Nashville sound is het zeker niet ! Dit is een heftige americana rock plaat geworden, die je doet denken aan Steve Earle in zijn jaren ’90 periode, en de wat stevigere nummers van Johnny Cash, die ook zo’n heerlijk rauwe stem heeft.. Hier en daar prachtig harmonica spel voor een echte outlaw sound ! “Junk”, “I Ain’t Goin’ Back There Anymore” en “I Fought With Angels” zijn wat rustigere nummers, al kun je met zijn rauwe stem niet echt van ballads spreken, daarvoor zijn ze dan weer net iets te ruig. Overigens wel mijn favoriete tunes ! Vooral door de prachtige lyrics. “Roadkill Blues” en “Pissin’ In The Wind” zijn geweldige countryrock nummers, waarbij je niet stil kunt blijven zitten.

Een lekkere cd voor in de auto, afwisselend upbeat en easy going. Teksten uit het leven gegrepen (triest, grappig, boos, onbegrepen en met humor) … geloof me, deze man heeft het niet altijd makkelijk gehad. Een mooi album, en als je van het wat stevigere werk houdt, zeker je geld waard, want er staan maar liefst 18 nummers op, allen van eigen hand !! Ruim een uur lang country outlaw roots rock ! After his 2002 album "Only Bleeding", and 2007's "Ain't No Train Outta Nashville", Pete Berwick has released his 3rd CD "Just Another Day In Hell". The first song "Vacancy In My Heart" is quite intense, and immediately I wondered how I would categorise this album ... hard rock with screaming electric guitars and a raw whiskey voice?

Fortunately the rest of the album sounded a lot better to the ears, and after a couple times that first number  I heard had me understanding the pain that Berwick shouts
out .. pissed off, he sings "Hey baby, why you want to leave me this way? ... and I'm goin' down for the last time in the deep blue ocean of love .... " As Pete says: "Call it roots rock, call it Americana, call it alternative country or call it cowpunk. In the end, it's "Just Another Day In Hell". He is definitely not the smooth Nashville sound, but more the sound of a hard working road warrior, and along for the ride his former band members  ...guitarist Rick Devries, bassist Nick Verbic, and drummer Rob Sury.

A smooth Nashville sound this certainly is not! This is a heavy rock americana... you do think of Steve Earle in his 90s period, and the slightly stronger numbers of Johnny Cash, delivered with a great a raw voice .. Here and there are beautiful harmonica playing complimenting an authentic outlaw sound! "Junk", "I Ain't  Goin 'Back There Anymore" and "I Fought With Angels" are some quieter songs, Which Pete does all that he can with his raw voice which is not necessarily suited for ballads. Still these are my favorite tunes because of the beautiful lyrics. "Roadkill Blues" and "Pissin 'In The Wind" are great country rock numbers where you can not sit still.

A great CD in the car, these are the stories of a man who's life has caught up with him. (sad, funny, angry, misunderstood and humorous) ... believe me, this man has not always had it easy. A beautiful album, especially for your money, because there are no fewer than 18 songs, and every one of them stands on it's own! Over an hour of outlaw country roots rock!
